Answer: Basic Rights Oregon is one of the states leading progressive organizations. We work to ensure that all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer Oregonians experience equality by building a broad and inclusive politically powerful movement, shifting public opinion and achieving policy victories. Basic Rights Oregon was formed in 1996 in response dozens of anti-gay ballot measures and to create a path for pro-active policy to bring dignity and respect to all LGBTQ Oregonians. Piece by piece, Basic Rights Oregon turned the tide on hate, racking up dozens of local victories. Our first big statewide victory came 11 years later, in 2007, when we passed comprehensive nondiscrimination protections and domestic partnership recognition during the same legislative session. Our efforts also led to anti-bullying legislation in schools, expanded access to health care for transgender Oregonians, the freedom to marry and a ban on youth conversion therapy. Today, Oregon is regarded as one of the most LGBTQ friendly state in the country. BRO is a 501(c)4 organization that maintains a 501(c)3 (Basic Rights Education Fund), a state candidate PAC and a ballot measure PAC.
