Answer: Amphibian Stage was the ambitious brainchild of three freshly graduated Theatre TCU students (Frogs...Amphibian...you see?). Where they lacked in business skills they made up for in big ideas. Now, founding Artistic Director Kathleen Culebro is still championing those same big ideas with over 2 decades of experience behind her. After 10 years of producing theatre in the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, Culebro was ready to relocate. Amphibian Stage bought a building all their own; a former nightclub where Nirvana played in the 90s. In 2012, this black box theatre was one of few operating businesses on South Main Street. As of November 2021, the South Main Village is home to more than 60 flourishing small businesses. When Amphibian moved in, South Main turned a corner -Paul Paine, Former President of Near Southside, Inc. In 22 seasons, Amphibian has produced 71 plays, 10 world premieres, 30 stand-up comic residencies, and developed 60 new plays. Our mission has, at times, expanded past the confines of a stage. Neighborhood Leap, released in 2022, is an augmented reality art-walk (the first of its kind seen by North Texas). And when we couldnt host live theatre in 2020, we turned to radio waves and created an immersive audio adaptation of The True History of Tragic Life and Triumphant Death of Julia Pastrana, The Ugliest Woman in the World (warmly reviewed by The New York Times). Despite its established presence, Amphibian Stage is still driven by the same eager ambition of its founders.
