Answer: A Voice Discovered is a non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status. We believe that the ability to communicate is a fundamental human right. Therefore, it is the mission of this foundation to provide FUNDING ASSISTANCE, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION, SUPPORT AND ADVOCACY to enhance the quality of life for individuals with communication impairments and thus benefit families and their extended community through access to appropriate technology resulting in improved communication means. A Voice Discovered provides funding through our grant program to assist people in our community with complex communication needs in gaining access to services and equipment. The services can include augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) assessments, therapy and/or training that is provided for their families as well as other community members who play important roles in their lives. The equipment can include communication devices (e.g., iPad, communication apps) and/or the necessary accessories to access those devices (e.g., wheelchair mounts, accessibility switches, etc.). A Voice Discovered also provides quarterly workshops in the Ventura County area to families, caregivers and professionals of people with complex communication needs who currently use or would benefit from AAC. These workshops include information about AAC, AAC assessments, AAC therapy, AAC implementation, funding and the funding process, as well as client rights information. A Voice Discovered has a small but growing lending library that includes iPads with communication apps, switches, switch toys and iPad/switch mounts for families and caregivers to trial before purchasing or requesting a grant. A Voice Discovered also has a growing parent/caregiver group that meets monthly to bimonthly providing coffee meet-ups for parents and caregivers and social meet-ups for the entire family.
